Back to Paris

Several writers and critics commented on the resolution, among them Osip, who latched on to those points on which the party might be said to have supported Lef indirectly, especially on the question of literary form. Mayakovsky made no comment. The resolution was published in Pravda and Izvestiya on 1 July, by which time he was already treading the deck of an Atlantic steamer en route to Mexico.

On 25 May Mayakovsky had gone to Paris in order to try yet again to travel on from there to the United States. He should have left on the twentieth but gambled away the money for the trip and remained in Moscow for a few days longer to try to win the money back. In order not to commit the same faux pas as last time, when he was forced to return to Moscow with his errand unaccomplished, he had written off the idea of requesting an American visa. Instead he had decided to try to get into the United States by means of a detour, via Mexico, which had recognized the Soviet Union the previous year. As he learned after only a week in Paris that his papers were ready, we may assume that he had been in contact with the Mexican authorities already in Moscow.

Since the first ship to Mexico did not leave until two weeks after Mayakovsky’s arrival in the French capital, he remained in Paris for the time being. As he had done on his earlier visit, he spent a lot of time with Léger and other artists and had the opportunity to experience every side of Paris: from the cheapest dives in Montmartre, where the pimps fought each other to the death before his eyes, to the most distinguished quartiers and the most luxurious restaurants. One evening he met Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the leader of the Italian Futurists, whom he had not seen since Marinetti’s visit to Russia in 1914.
